Lomunyak, alias Lucky

Lomunyak aka” Lucky” in Samburu language, now 8months old.

He was rescued from Elephant Bedroom Camp Samburu National Reserve after being separated from his mother mid-April this year.

He was approximately 6-8 weeks old when rescued after surviving what seemed to be a lion attack. He nearly drowned at Ewaso Nyiro River when the security staff from Elephant Bedroom Camp heard him wailing. The brave officers jumped into the fast flowing river and managed successfully to bring him to rescue.

The violent tumbling left him with a laceration to the head and the blunt force he felt by the submerged rocks knocks and also injuries from the lion attack.

A team from Save The Elephants and Kenya Wildlife Service kept him warm with the calf till we arrived. Save The Elephants team also searched for the calf's mother but were unable to find any trace. He was stabilized by Dr Mathew Mutinda and Reteti Rescue team before he was brought to the Sanctuary.

As would be expected, Lomunyak was traumatized when he arrived.It took us a long time to gain his trust, treat his wounds.

He has now adjusted and doing wonderful with his little brothers and sisters.
