Seek’s Rescue Story

Seek came to Reteti on New Year’s Eve in 2020, at the age of one. After being separated from his Mama and being abandoned by his herd, he was thankfully found by a warden from Laikipia Kenya Wildlife Service. Apart from the challenges that face all young orphans – including healing from both physical and emotional wounds – Seek also had an injury which left him completely blind in his left eye. His poor vision probably led to him losing track of both his Mama and herd. Elephants are generally excellent mothers, so when they lose their calves, it’s mostly because of natural reasons. Sadly, despite extensive veterinary treatments and examinations, nothing could be done for this eye. However, Seek is remarkably strong – and his overall health, ability to adapt, and use of all his other senses impressed us from the very first day he arrived – and keep helping him to develop and thrive.

Seek Today

Despite being blind in one eye, Seek has already overcome so many obstacles, and he's gently guiding the way for the other orphans too. He often takes the lead when they all head out, showing them where to graze – and signalling when it’s time to return for their evening feed. He’s also humble and kind-hearted, and when he gets his bottle of milk first, he will always excuse himself as soon as he’s done to ensure that the rest of the group can get theirs. Soon after arriving at the sanctuary, he already started fitting in and integrating with his fellow orphans; and over time, he’s become close friends with Long'uro, Lomunyak, Kalepo and Sera in particular. On most days, you’ll find him playing with Long'uro and Lomunyak. Seek is well on his way to returning to the wilderness one day. With everyone at Reteti fully committed to helping him become wild and independent again, we are so excited to see how his path home will still unfold!
